Trained originally as a psychologist, I am interested in how living beings transform adversity into gift. I am keen to portray both brokenness and buoyancy, where I see it both in nature and in human conditions. The psychologist in me finds value in the ruptured and mended life. I use autobiographical experiences to create a visual landscape that documents the ‘everyday’ life of people living in the UK and in India. I use symbols such as gold to embody the power of wealth and inheritance, entitlement and privilege or, depending on the context, to embody the sacred and the transformed. I use the magpie with its reference to the old nursery rhyme, One for sorrow, two for joy, to signify loneliness or, where they appear together, both suffering and joy. Often, I insert a digital device such as a Mac or a Smartphone to exemplify the invidiousness and inescapability of technology and the virtual realities that they create.. Thus, through my art, I hope to challenge societal reality and to encourage a thoughtful response to the situations we find ourselves in. I am privileged to say that one of my paintings was chosen for the Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2020 Exhibition (Friday Evening 1). Another (Burnout 1) was selected for inclusion in the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize Exhibition of 2019-2020.
