Figurative: Inks

The Figurative: Inks Series explores the vagaries of everyday life. Common human experiences  of exhaustion, determination, service, gratitude are expressed on canvas or on paper. Zen Buddhist principles of incompleteness, imperfection and impermanence are used to guide the creation of the images. Thus most of the paintings in this series consist largely of unpainted spaces with unhidden instances of imperfection. employing with inks that are not archival. Bamboo pens and Fine liners are used to highlight sharp edges and lines.

The motifs used often refer to the invidious impact of technology in the form of an ever present Mac. or iPhone. Symbols such as the Magpie or the Cross or the clock represent sorrow or suffering or joy.
