Professional Practice

This unit has stimulated my thinking about what I want to be as a professional artist. It is clear that I am captivated by two strands of art: the symbolic (as in the Resilience 1 and 2, Betrayed by Brexit) and the representational (as in the portrayal of positive emotion in The Ballad of David and Nimmi, Mother and Her Daughters, Tenderly Together 1 and 2). I am still painting on relatively small supports and will need to consider whether I want to experiment with much larger ones i.e. ones that are designed for art galleries or whether I would like to stay with sizes that are easily accommodated in English homes and hotels.

Additionally as we progress through the next 1½ years I will think about whether it is appropriate to apply for a residency and /or funding for further study. I will also try to find a space in which to exhibit my work and already have an offer from the Assistant Bishop of Barking and Dagenham to use the Church Hall for this purpose. When I have a substantial body of new work, I will think about finding an agent to represent me. I will also contact people who are writing about difference e.g. Ian Wainwright, author of Phenomenal Difference (Wainwright, 2018) in order to publicise my work as a Black British artist.
